Just outside Portsmouth the countryside is dominated by the South Downs, and within the valleys cut by rivers such as the Rother and Arun, towns and villages nestle including Chichester, Midhurst, Petersfield and Arundle. Most of the places listed below are accessible by train and /or bus.

To the west
The west of Portsmouth is dominated by the port of Southampton, and is famous for the departure point of the Titanic and the great transatlantic liners. But now mainly container ships visit the port the cruise liners are making a comeback and you may see them gliding majestically down Southampton Water to sunny climates. Keeping on the cruising theme the pilgrim fathers departed from here to America. There is also Winchester, Salisbury and The New Forest.
