HMS Victory

  • She was ordered in1758
  • Laid down at Chatham Dockyard 1759
  • Launched 1765
  • Commissioned in 1778
  • Designed to carry 104 guns. However in 1808 reduced to 98 but was reclassed as a 104 1817.
  • Displacement 3550 tonnes (Type 23 Frigate 4900 tonnes and a Type 45 Destroyer 7350)
  • Length 227feet overall, beam 52feet.  (Type 23 Frigate 436 feet by 53 feet and a Type 45 Destroyer 499 feet by 59 feet)
  • Compliment 850 men, (destroyer 190 men and frigate 185).
  • Although Lindsey was appointed as first Captain, Keppel replaced him in the same year.

    3. Cape  St Vincent 1797
    4. Battle of Trafalgar 1805

  • 1798 she was unfit for service and converted as a hospital ship at Chatham.
  • 1799 HMS Impregnable was lost off Chichester and the Victory replaced her.
  • In 1800 work was started to update her and was completed in 1803.
  • In 1803 Nelson first joined the ship with Sutton as the Captain.
  • Her active career ended in 1812 and was moored in Portsmouth as a depot ship.
  • During 1889 she was fitted as a school of Telegraphy until 1904.
  • 1921 a fund started to save her.
  • The next year she was moved to No.2 dock in Portsmouth.
  • She was damaged in 1941.
  • And today she is the oldest commissioned warship in the world.
