Gunwharf quays Portsmouth. a brief history

• 12th century known as Richards docks.
• Camber Docks original berthing place in Portsmouth.
• Kings Mill, the remains of which are still at Gunwharf Quays.
• 1526 Beastons bastion was located inside the south gate and was North West corner of the defences of Portsmouth.
• 1551. Improvements made to defences with earth embankments and a great dyke.
• 1680. Further improved and made larger.
• Land was reclaimed from the sea.
• The mill pond by Kings Mill had a channel leading to it and then filled after the mill was made redundant. This water course has now been reopened and forms the water feature dividing Gunwharf Quays.
• Gunwharf Quays was the first ordinance yard for the Navy and was established in the late 17th century.
• In the 19th century my great great grandfather worked as a blacksmith, my great grandfather as a rope maker while my grandfather worked on the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert.
