  • 1859 HMS Warrior was ordered and was laid down that same year.
  • 1860 WMS Warrior was launched and was commissioned 1861.
  • The displacement of HMS Warrior is 9358 tonnes.
  • Length 418 feet and the beam is 59 feet.
  • The compliment 705 officers.
  • When launched HMS Warrior was the largest, fastest and most heavily armed warship in the world.
  • Withdrawn from service 1883.
  • She was built to rival the French ironclad La Gloire which was being built secretly.
  • Why build in iron? Wooden ships can only reach a maximum size, they needed a bigger ship. Then there was the lack of timber and also it was far quicker to build.
  • 1902 HMS Warrior became a storage hulk and renamed Vernon III in 1904.
  • 1924 she was put up for sale and remained in Portsmouth for 5 years.
  • 1929 Towed to Pembroke dock and became a floating oil jetty
  • 1979 restoration in Hartlepool began and arrived in Portsmouth 1987.
